Tasting notes:
Nose: Fruity, yet clearly phenolic smoke, which is unmistakably part of a classic Laphroaig. At first the full Laphi program with warm tar, Hansaplast and seaweed, after a while something calms down and the aroma focus shifts to lime juice, peach and apricot jam. It is always amazing how quickly the nose gets used to the peat smoke and eventually almost completely blocks it out.
Palate: Strong start, dry smoke with smoked bacon aroma, dried seaweed, black pepper, chili spice, cloves, a little liquorice. Given the type of cask, I expected vanilla, but it's more like toffee and marzipan, along with malty sugar beet syrup and sweet-tart quince jelly. Over time, a distinct oak spice spreads through the mouth, displacing the fruit aromas but leaving the peat smoke untouched.
Finish: Medium to long, dry. The overall tart fruit notes, which emerge from dried orange peel and sweet and sour apple, try to find their way into a well-ordered formation once again in order to assert themselves against oak spice and peat smoke, but ultimately they have to raise the white flag.
